Grade Level: 6th grade (can be adapted for other grade levels)
Integration of Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to create a booklet on an Outer Space subtopic with definitions, pictures, and examples in groups.
Standards: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings; analyze the impact of a specific word choice on meaning and tone.
Anticipatory Set
Watch the Bill Nye The Science Guy “Outer Space” Video. While watching the video, students will jot down notes. They will fold a notebook piece of paper in half. On one side, they will record facts from the video. On the other half, they will write down questions they have about the solar system that they would like to learn more about. Students will raise their hands to share their notes to the class.
Procedures
- Students will break into small predetermined groups of 4 or 5. They will select a topic about outer space from a list. They will conduct research and become experts on the topic that they chose. Every group must have a different topic.
- Possible topics include: planets, moon phases, stars, space travel, astronomy, orbits, etc.
- Students will go to the computer lab to research their topics.
- Students will select ten vocabulary words/important terms/important people from their topic. The words will be from their textbook or from what they found online.
- Students will make a booklet on the topic they chose. They will include definitions, pictures, and examples. The pictures can be illustrated, printed from a computer, or copied from a textbook. Students must also must write a few sentences stating why each vocabulary word is important.
- Students will present their booklet to the class as a group. Their peers will ask questions, and the groups presenting will do their best to answer those question. Individually, students will write down at least three new vocabulary words they learned from each group, along with brief definitions of the words.
- Students are able to draw the definitions and examples of the words, which will help them define, identify, and understand words.
- Students will be working in groups, so they can feed off of each other.
Formative and Summative Assessment: There will be a rubric with a checklist of things that the students need to include in their booklets. They will receive a grade based on if they meet the requirements in the rubric.
Rubric Example:
- Focus on one specific sub-unit of the solar system (5 pts)
- Cover page with name of subunit and group members (2 pts)
- Table of contents page (2 pts)
- Vocabulary words are in alphabetical order (2 pts)
- At least 10 vocabulary words selected (5 pts)
- All words include a clear definition (10 pts)
- All words include a picture (10 pts)
- At least 4 words have an example (4 pts)
- All words include a brief statement on why the vocabulary word is important (10 pts)
- Project is neat and easy to read (5 pts)
- Students present each vocabulary word with definitions during presentation (10 pts)
- All members of the group contributed in booklet and presentation (10 pts)
- Write down 3 vocabulary words from each group and define terms (15 pts)

- Computer lab with printers
- Copy machine
- Art supplies (construction paper, markers, colored pencils, scissors, etc.)
- Solar system textbooks

Technology: Students will conduct research in a computer lab -Students have the option to make their project on the computer
